I experienced déjà vu while helping a student with a scholarship essay, a response to the late Barbara Jordan’s 1976 Democrat National Convention keynote speech. In the speech, still considered one of the most powerful in history, Jordan called for unity not only within her party but also within the country as a whole. She warned against our country’s becoming “a collection of interest groups: city against suburb, region against region, individual against individual; each seeking to satisfy private wants.” In the last presidential election, much was made of the division between red and blue, yet two and a half years later, the labor crisis in Wisconsin pitted middle class people against each other, and the federal government almost came to a halt because of an inability to find common ground. Three months after Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and eighteen others were shot and calls for civil discourse filled the web, have we gotten any closer to the unity Jordan sought? Preacher Terry Jones’ burning of the Koran and Kansas State Rep. Virgil Peck’s suggestion that hunters use helicopters to target immigrants like “feral hogs” suggest otherwise. The fact that, as Jordan noted, Thomas Jefferson requested, “Let us restore to social intercourse that harmony and that affection without which liberty and even life are but dreary things” suggests that it is in our nature to oppose each other. These days, technology has made the world much smaller than it was in Jefferson’s time. Information and misinformation travel a lot quicker, and people have access to easier, more efficient ways of hurting each other. Let’s heed the words of Jefferson, Jordan, and more recent voices of reason and work together to create a country the next generation deserves.
